This is thanks to adapting the recipe to include plant-based ingredients.

We replaced dairy ingredients with plant-based ingredients. This makes a significant impact on the Vegan KitKat® bar’s carbon footprint.

We increased the cocoa ingredients in the Vegan KitKat® bar to ensure the delicious taste.

We removed all dairy ingredients to be certified Vegan, but to ensure the great taste we replaced them with new ingredients like rice syrup and more cocoa content that require additional transport adding slightly more carbon impact.

We haven’t measured the carbon reduction alone. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of your Vegan KitKat® bar was completed internally and the critical review (ISO14040-2006) was conducted by the sustainability consultancy, Quantis. using the best available data. Then the Carbon Trust certified the carbon footprint reduction comparing your standard KitKat® milk chocolate bar with your Vegan KitKat® bar.
They delivered the “Carbon Reduction Certificate” to confirm that a Vegan KitKat® bar has a 18% lower carbon footprint than a standard KitKat® milk chocolate bar.
This is just the beginning of our journey to carbon neutrality. We’re aiming to continue our reduction journey, monitoring our carbon footprint with the support of trusted partners.

Which consists of planting forest and fruit trees on cocoa farms aimed at building climate resilience and sequestering carbon. It also offers cocoa farming families the possibility to generate alternative sources of income.

WORKING WITH UK DAIRY FARMERS

Who supply the majority of milk for KitKat® in the UK to halve the emissions of their farms by 2026 through improving soil health (thereby capturing more carbon from the atmosphere), rotational grazing, planting diverse cover crops and focusing on homegrown grass based feed.

CONTINUE TO EXPAND THE NESTLE COCOA PLAN

and work with the Rainforest Alliance to certify our cocoa. We are working to make our cocoa supply chain deforestation-free by 2025 through, among other activities forest conservation, forest restoration and agroforestry.
